Note to self. Remember this advice from Wislawa Szymborska: “Your existential pains come a trifle too easily. We’ve had enough despair and gloomy depths. ‘Deep thoughts,’ dear Thomas, says (Mann, of course, who else), ‘should make us smile’ .”
